LOVE TO DANCE

Here’s what you need to know and do:

Your dance can take the form of an activity, event or simply a few dance moves. It can be any style from street to ballet, it can be large or small and filmed absolutely anywhere from bedrooms to playgrounds to ballrooms – it’s your call!

Tell the fan page about your dance and if you want us to, we’ll promote your event or activity as an I Love to Dance event on the fan page PLUS we’ll send you some very special I Love to Dance badges for you and all your mates who like a bit of a dance.

Whatever dance you choose to do – why not film it, tell us in the video why you love to dance and share it on our I Love to Dance page. You will automatically be entered into our competition to win one of 5 Wii Fit Bundles* – so get those video cameras and phones out and get filming!

Flourish - South East Dance

Flourish is a comprehensive programme of professional development opportunities for dance artists and teachers across South East England. It aims to provide access to high quality training and encourage discourse in dance. Following a very successful autumn season, we are looking forward to launching the spring season of Flourish 2010 in February. Highlights of the new season will include: an intensive weekend with Rosemary Butcher in Oxford; a workshop/audition with Willie Dorner in Brighton, a workshop with Arthur Pita, also in Brighton and a series of curated events by Lucy Cash (South East Dance Associate Artist). The season will kick off on Wednesday 10 February with In Focus: A seminar for teachers and lecturers working in screen dance at Rich Mix in London, followed by Survival Tactics for the Anarchic Dancer, a performance lecture by Professor Liz Aggiss. This January, the biggest national dance competition to ever hit UK TV screens comes to Sky1 HD. Scouring the nation for Britain’s best crews, troupes and solo dancers of all styles and ages, Got To Dance looks to discover the country’s most talented dance floor divas. The one and only Davina McCall hosts the glittering competition that will push its contestants to their limits as they strive to win the life-changing cash prize of £100,000.

South East Dance is pleased to announce the launch of Flourish a comprehensive programme of professional development opportunities for dance artists and teachers across South East England. Step into Dance summer school - RAD 10th - 21st August 09

From 10 to 21 of August Step into Dance are leading a free Summer school at the RAD for 14 to 19 year olds as part of Wandsworth Summer Uni. The course offers students the opportunity to learn new techniques and choreograph their own dance routine. Classes will be taught by Sue Goodman, Jade Shaw (one of our Step into Dance teachers and Stella McGowan, the UK BGirl champion will also be a guest teacher. Following last years hugely successful competition, 8 groups were selected to train with with Nike D'Clash Crew. Since that time winning groups have performed all over the city and have continued to develop their skills.

If you're 14 to 22 and you and your friends think you have what it takes to be dancers come along with a prepared routine of 1 and a half minutes to the Royal Festival Hall.

Join Amici for a week of unique evening events hosted and run by Wolfgang Stange, giving you the opportunity to observe and take part in open-workshops and live demonstrations of their methods and practises, with guest appearances by other companies that Amici have worked with.

The Lyric's resident dance company, Amici, integrate able-bodied and disabled artists and performers. Founded by Wolfgang Stange in 1980, Amici have had a major impact worldwide challenging conventional attitudes about disability and the arts.

Tue 9 June / Behind the Scenes with Amici A special preview showing of extracts from The Magic of Amici, a new DVD and resource pack of Amici’s groundbreaking and original working methods. The evening will be introduced by Wolfgang Stange and Amici members with an open floor discussion.

Wed 10 June / Open-workshop A chance to take part in an Amici class run by Wolfgang Stange. Join in Amici’s inspiring movement improvisations.

Sadler's Wells Dance Contest

Sadler’s Wells Theatre has launched a global online dance contest through YouTube. The competition will last four years and each year's winner will receive £2000 and will be brought to London to perform on the main stage at Sadler’s Wells Sampled, the theatre's dance showcase weekend. The contest will build up to a final performance of all winners in 2012. To enter the competition you will have to upload a video of your own original piece of dance (any style) lasting from 30 sec to 3 min on YouTube, and subsequently submit it to Global Dance Contest

Funding Story: Step Into Dance

The Jack Petchey Foundation and the Royal Academy of Dance have brought the art form to children across London. When the Jack Petchey Foundation approached the Royal Academy of Dance in November 2005, with the aim of funding a pilot of extra-curricular dance classes for 400 students in 28 secondary schools, Melanie Adams, head of marketing and communications at the academy, was sceptical. She says: "As a dance education charity, it's not every day that someone contacts you with a proposal to fund your mission. However, the more I found out, the more I felt secure that this was a real possibility. When we met, it was very clear that the foundation had done its research. "The key to this has been partnership. We had very strong ideas of what we wanted to achieve, and so did they. We were very lucky in that those rarely clashed - but there was a bit of compromise along the way." Adams admits that, although the Step into Dance pilot has been successful, not everything has gone smoothly. The Academy was unsure about working in the four London boroughs the foundation wanted it to: Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington. However, Adams says: "I'm very glad we did, because we have widened participation in dance." Andrew Billington, director of the foundation, agrees about the importance of a genuine partnership. He says: "We did ask questions, mainly about the ability to meet the needs of schools that didn't have very good facilities for dance. And, yes, some of the tutors have had to adapt some of their thinking, but they've been prepared to do that. "We were very concerned about offering different forms of dance, and the academy was happy to do that. But forcing people to do things they don't really want to won't work - both parties genuinely need to appreciate each other's goals and interests." The Step into Dance pilot has been so successful that the foundation has given it £179,000 to extend the scheme to four more London boroughs - Croydon, Hammersmith & Fulham, Merton and Wandsworth. It plans to extend the initiative further. "The key to rolling it out was our ability to say 'these are the areas where we can improve' and theirs to say 'we realise we need to get more out of it in this area'," Adams says. The questions will continue, but that's precisely what makes the partnership effective.

Move It is the UK's biggest dance exhibition, held at London Olympia. This year's event runs from 7-9 March and Step into Dance will be holding two taster workshops on Friday 7 March:

12.30pm - 1.15pm, Step into Dance workshop for teachers

2.00pm - 2.45pm, Step into Dance workshop for students

Step into Dance students will also be performing on the main stage at 3.30pm
