About Step Into Dance
Step into Dance is a fully inclusive, open access dance programme. The programme offers weekly, extra-curricular* dance classes to secondary schools in selected London boroughs with a view to rolling the programme out London-wide, over time.
Funded by The Jack Petchey Foundation and led by the Royal Academy of Dance, the programme aims to widen participation in dance for secondary school students aged between 11 and 16 years old. Both organisations are committed to creating opportunities for young people, and widening participation to dance within safe and inclusive learning environments.
The programme aims:
- To provide a fully inclusive and sustainable dance programme.
- To engage both students and in-school teachers in the benefits of dance and signpost them to further training opportunities.
- To create opportunities for the wider school population and local community to get involved.
Aimed at 11-16 year olds, the programme will run over at least two terms, with dance teaching offered in 10 week blocks. There is also an optional showing of work for parents / guardians, friends and the wider community at the end of the Academic year. Participation in the programme is free for schools and dance classes are offered as 2 - hour sessions per school, per week, on an extra-curricular basis, unless otherwise requested. The maximum capacity for a dance class is 30 students.
A diverse range of dance forms are on offer; priority in each dance genre is given to schools which do not offer dance as part of the curriculum and to students with little or no prior dance experience.
The programme is fully inclusive, meaning that our teachers have experience of working with a range of abilities, including physical and learning disabilities. *In schools with Special Educational Needs dance classes may take place within school hours.
